| October 2005

Starts with 'Angel'; a seminal drum and bass track which seemed to promise the dawning of a new era and cultural movement which never really surfaced from the underground it grew up in. Yet the lyrics are simple and clear: 'Angel, oh my soul. Stay with me. Don't let go.' Next is 'Original'. What is originality? Did it ever exist? All we have now is simulation, as implied by the tongue in cheek statement, 'you're original'. On/Off - the states of our electrical devices, but also the digital bits of information that make up our world. Singin' in the Rain - from a TV advert, but also a remake of a classic song. Numb - more of a moment than a song in U2's Zooropa set. Screens flash behind the Edge as he mumbles the mantras of the postmodern age. Technologic speaks for itself. No more 'I love you's'. I've always thought Annie Lennox was an excellent postmodern artist; fractured pieces put together and make of them what you will. Daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car; well, he is. Isn't he. Has already. Human after all? Yeah, we believe you Daft Punk. Let it Be - not as good as the original, but not bad, and quite appropriate given everything that's been going on recently. Let this be the playlist's prayer.
