Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury should be sounding dated now (1992), but it was on the button then and it's on the button today with its message (Disposable Heroes). Rob Swift has just landed a new album (Wargames) and it stands to become just as classic. Five tracks are used to form the backbone of this playlist. Hush now, the president is speaking. A Nation with a Mission. How is it anything like the Way of Christ?
Away from the hip hop backdrop, Jamie Cullum wrote 'Oh God' when he was feeling down about the year's events - not just human-caused, but also natural disasters - from the tsunami in December 04 and the hurricaines, to the London bombings: 'I know it's been a while since I have talked to you. And maybe you're the one who makes the winds blow...Oh God, can you tell us when it's going to stop. Maybe it's not.. ..just down to you.' A few lines succinctly describing a number of popular (misguided?) sentiments - a feeling that God might be responsible for a terror of his (sic.) own, and an optimism that despite this context of terror at all angles, humans can still change things. We can all share the optimism. Buffalo Springfield's track just somehow needs to be here in amongst all this gritty realism. As do some insightful words from Noam Chomsky which should be a good tonic against the propaganda machine, and some beautiful music from Nintin Sawhenny and Coldplay's new album. (Men! Capable of bombs and poetry.)
